Lux (lx) measures illuminance: the luminous flux falling on a surface, in lumens per square metre. It decreases with the square of the distance to the source (E = I/d²). Direct sunlight delivers tens of thousands of lux; that is why an outdoor screen must combine many nits with low reflection to stay legible.
