Grayscale

Grayscale refers to the individual brightness levels a screen can render per primary colour (red, green, blue). More grayscale levels give smoother transitions and less banding. They are expressed as colour depth in bits and realised via pulse-width modulation; a high refresh rate is needed to show them flicker-free.
