Colour depth

Colour depth (bit depth) expresses the number of grayscale levels per primary colour in bits: 14-bit = 2¹⁴ = 16,384 levels, 16-bit = 2¹⁶ = 65,536 levels per colour. Higher colour depth gives softer gradients and retains detail at low brightness. For indoor and outdoor, at least 14-bit is recommended. The total number of colours is the number of levels to the third power.
